I wish I knew how to begin this. About a year and a half ago, I stumbled upon a couple of websites. I don’t remember exactly how I came across them, but I do remember that it was an accident. I pretty much just happened to run into them . Well, I should say, I ran into one, and then it linked to the other. I first ran into one about a six-year-old kid named Jarod Bennett. It was a memorial website posted by his parents. I remember reading it, looking at the pictures, and how he died tragically. I remember a few tears welling up. And then it linked to another girl’s website. It was another memorial website by another kid’s parents, but this time it was about a 16-year-old girl named Katie Ayler. Jarod’s linked to Katie’s because, when Katie died on August 27, 2002, her parents did not get a tombstone for her until December of 2003. Until they did, they used a cross that was put up by Katie and Brandi Cook (her friend)’s friends at their car crash site where they both died. Their friends put up a cross at the crash site, and the Aylor family used that same cross to mark her grave until they got the tombstone. On December 19, 2003, Jarod Bennett lost his 6 YEAR OLD life at his school, where a 290 pound cafeteria table collapsed on his head, killing him. When the Aylors heard about this, they offered the very cross that once marked their daughter’s grave, to the Bennett family, to mark Jarod Bennett’s grave until they got his tombstone. That is how the 2 websites, the 2 families, the 2 spirits of the 2 dead children, are forever linked. On December 19, 2005, exactly 2 years to the day that Jarod Bennett lost his life, the State of Ohio passed "Jarod's Law".

‘Jarod's Law' triggered by death of 6-year-old boy’

LEBANON Gov. Bob Taft joined a candlelight vigil on Monday inside the Warren County administration building after signing Jarod's Law — legislation designed to remove hazards from Ohio schools triggered by the death of a 6-year-old Lebanon boy exactly two years before.
"Thank you for transforming your loss into a very positive change," Taft said turning to the boy's parents.
Jim and Jennifer Bennett have pushed for the law since their son, Jarod, was killed on Dec. 19, 2003, when a collapsed cafeteria table, standing upright, fell over on him at Louisa Wright Elementary School, where he was attending an after-school program.
Although federal safety officials identified the tables as hazardous in 1987, they remain in use around the nation, officials said.
Jarod was the 15th child killed by the tables, according to lawyers representing the family.
Jim Bennett, said he'd been contacted in May by the parents of a Florida boy badly injured when a collapsible cafeteria table fell on him during karate class.
The bill's sponsor, state Rep. Tom Raga, R-Deerfield Twp., said no other state laws aimed at school hazards had been identified.
Jarod's Law will require state health inspectors to identify hazards such as the tables during inspections. Details will be ironed out by state health officials, Raga said, estimating the inspections could begin next fall.
Taft's visit marked the culmination of efforts in Ohio. He was among those who suggested Jarod's Law could spark a nationwide campaign to eliminate hazards from public schools.
More than 100 people encircled Jarod's family with lighted candles during the ceremony, which ended after people called out the names of lost loved ones they were missing during the holiday season.

Jarod's Law is the worst law passed recently. I'm a student, and I guess you wouldn't understand unless you were one, and the restrcitions are absolutely ridiculous. Completely out of line and uncalled for. Being a student holds many responsibilites, and I believe personal safety is one. We're not allowed to even have Purel. Our chemistry lab had to get rid of over two thirds of their stock chemicals. We're being punished for a a death of a child. It's not very fair, I believe.
Although I agree that many things need to be changed with regards to student safety, I believe that it should be done with sense and with a thought towards acceptable risk. Safety is part and parcel with responsibility, and that is what we must teach students.
What happened to the Bennets is terrible. No parent should have to bury their child especially if the cause was preventable. Unfortunately, what is happening to the educational system is almost of comparable tragedy, but it too is preventable.
This law has taken this horrible incident and used it both as a smokescreen and a banner with which to negatively reform education in Ohio. It has spread into all areas of education: into areas where reform is needed and helpful, and into areas where changes are deleterious. While Jarod’s Law (I hope) means well, it is far too restrictive of what can and can’t be found in a school. In some instances, Jarod’s Law is the cure that is worse than the poison.
While its purpose is noble and its cause tragic, Jarod's Law is indeed a terrible law in practice. This is especially true for the sciences, where the educational process depends on students seeing demonstrations and performing experiments themselves. In particular, Jarod's law as applied to chemistry is not only inappropriate, it is totally irresponsible. By taking "dangerous" chemicals like silver nitrate (aka luna salts, used in pediatric care as a post surgery antimicrobial-for INFANTS) or stearic acid (used in all of your hand soaps!), this law whittles away at the core of science and as applied to the sciences, is downright lunacy. It is blatantly obvious that the persons who wrote the chemical restrictions had little knowledge of chemistry or of hazardous materials. Their list of chemical “have nots” is patently absurd! How far must we go to be safe, and what do we sacrifice? I will agree that some things that this law prohibits in the high school laboratory certainly do NOT belong there. However, I maintain that many things are absolutely indispensable for the teacher and the students. Restricting the use of essential laboratory supplies is akin to taking away the teacher's chalk and board. How he to teach, and the students, how are they to learn if the teaching tools are gone? So why then do we parents, we legislators, and we professors and teachers complain about poor student performance in the sciences?
I recall as a high school student in advanced placement chemistry (a course which got me out of my first year in freshman university chemistry) that the class was a balance between the theory, and the applied theory (lab practicals). Complex equations, lengthy formulas, and long lectures occupied much of the class. The highlight of my week was being able to see those abstract concepts in practice during our lab session. Many students enjoyed actually seeing what we were supposed to know for our exams. Even the most apathetic, no-interest, to-heck-with-chemistry-I'll-be-a-business-major, classmates of mine still would look up with fascination at the teacher's demonstrations and revel in his simple explanations. It was with many an “ooh”, “ah”, and "so that's how it works? Cool!” that my teacher would conduct those demonstrations. Jarod's law removes these necessary chemicals from the classroom and thereby removes a crucial element--hands on learning. Regardless of whatever technological surrogate, showing even a live feed of an experiment is no substitute for seeing the real thing with one's own eyes, and doing it with one's own hands. Even the most innocuous chemicals and compounds can be dangerous in the wrong hands and in the wrong situations. Yet that is also true about baseballs, automobiles, ladders, and a myriad of other harmless items.
I have nothing against the goal of this law; I fully support the safety of schoolchildren as much as the next human being, but I must ask, safety at what cost? At the cost of education? At the cost of interest in science and knowing, and seeking the truth with one's own hands and intellect? This law, if spread nationwide will have a negative influence not only on education in the sciences. Less young people interested in the sciences means fewer engineers to build our bridges and highways, fewer chemists to make our medicines and plastics, fewer doctors to save our lives, and less security for our great nation as we lose our technological edge to other nations.
If we are to have students aspire to greater things in the sciences and elsewhere, they must have a solid foundation. Above all, they must have interest in their subject. Interest is the driving force, the impetus for discovery. Take that away in high school and middle school, and you take away our future. The foundation of their future work will be weak, and will crumble as they pursue their advanced degrees.
The times have changed. It is not 1958 and mercury isn't "safe". People lock their doors at night, with reason. Litigation and legislation have increased almost exponentially. Chemistry sets come with table salt, rust, distilled water, and an assortment of tame, lame, and uninteresting chemicals. As well they should--a child could possibly poison, maim, or blind him/herself. Just like he could shoot his eye out with a pellet gun, or be knocked comatose with a baseball. It’s not the chemicals or the science changing. Instead, people are changing. In 1958, when a youngster could walk to the pharmacy and buy all manner of restricted items, why wasn't there all manner of horrible happenings? Kids today should be better than their counterparts from 50 years ago. Why are youngsters (and some adults) of 2008 less responsible than those of 1958, a generation that took us to the moon? Instead of passing draconian laws to fix what isn't really broken, perhaps we should seek out what is really causing the problems in our society and try fixing that.
I am for safer schools, but only if we can reconcile safety with responsible learning and inspiring our children who are our hope for the future.
Although this entry is old. I find myself googling my little brothers name to see what all has been written over the years. I thank you for spreading word of him. And i do understand some of the comments about the law. But what people should know off hand is yes my family did get the law passed , but they did not have a whole say in the safety checkings of schools. There is a board that created the specifics of banning certain things. So i would like everyone to know that before they start saying they are being punished for a childs death by having things taken away from them . Jarods story is a great one , and was so hard to still obtain is that that people had to learn to love one another more by loosing someone they loved the most.
