OH, and some "big wigs" were at our plant today, (they had a tv news conferance that I saw after Sesame Street), that GM is investing $30 million to build a plant extention (GMT 900 parts sequencing center), and hiring about 200 more people, which will come from other UAW members transferring from other (North American) plants. So, that is pretty cool.

MIDLAND, Texas – Jessica McClure, the toddler who captured the nation's heart and evoked its prayers 18 years ago from 22 feet below the surface of this oil patch town, is a married woman.

McClure – now 19 and a student at Midland College – was married Saturday to Daniel Morales, 32, at a Church of Christ in a small rural community outside of the town. The couple met at a day-care center where Morales’s sister worked with the bride.

Inside, the church sanctuary was decorated with loops of white tulle for the private afternoon ceremony. At the altar was a white archway, and suspended underneath were two open hearts, mirroring the interlocking hearts on the couple’s wedding invitation. Posted on the door was a request made to guests: "No Cameras or Picture Phones! No Video Cameras" – a message in step with the extremely private McClure family.

"She's always been that way, just laid-back and not a lot of fanfare," says Cedie Proctor, an aunt of Jessica’s.

McClure – known to the world as Baby Jessica – was 18 months old when she fell into a narrow, abandoned well in the back yard of her aunt's home in 1987. Within hours, scores of rescue workers were feverishly boring into the earth, hoping to reach her before she succumbed to the cold. After 58 hours and with a global audience, two paramedics plucked Jessica from the well and brought her to safety.

At 25, McClure stands to earn a trust fund reportedly valued in excess of $1 million, made up of contributions from well-wishers around the world.

"She's 'Baby Jessica,' everybody’s baby," Morales recently told PEOPLE.

Those who know McClure say she's a quiet person and that the family long ago decided to strongly resist attention for the famous event that occurred almost 20 years ago. One of the only clues to the impending wedding was a Wal-Mart registry.

"She hardly talked," says Abby Casas, who went to Greenwood County High School with Jessica, who graduated in 2004. "But everybody knew who she was."

Crews struggled for 58 hours to rescue Jessica McClure after she fell into an 8-inch-wide pipe in October 1987.


The celebrity magazine reported that McClure, now 19, married Daniel Morales, 32, at a rural church outside Midland on Saturday. A sign on the door instructed guests not to take pictures or video, the magazine said.

The two met at a day-care center where Morales' sister worked with McClure, according to the magazine.
The case of 18-month-old Jessica created a nationwide sensation. Emergency crews rescued her — a dramatic moment covered on live television — after digging a parallel shaft and then breaking through the wall of the well.

Security Alert: E-mail Worm Attempts to Shut Down Security Programs

Verizon Online is warning its customers about a mass-mailing worm, W32.Blackmal.E@mm, that presents a medium-high threat risk to computer users. The worm spreads from the infected computer to other computers by obtaining e-mail addresses found on the infected machine.

The e-mail that carries the W32.Blackmal.E@mm payload disguises itself as an e-mail containing an attachment with pornographic content. The subject lines differ but are normally adult in nature. When executed, the worm tries to close any firewall, anti-virus software or similar security programs. The worm also is programmed to delete certain files, named with the following extensions, on the third day of every month: DOC, XLS, MDB, MDE, PPT, PPS, ZIP, RAR, PDF, PSD and DMP. The worm has been nicknamed the Kama Sutra worm for its pornographic content.

Twenty Years Ago Today.....

"Three, two, one . . . "Roger. Go with throttle up," shuttle commander Dick Scobee radioed on a freezing January morning 20 years ago. His daughter Kathie, 25, huddled with her mother, brother and infant son on a roof at Cape Canaveral, along with the assembled families of the six other Challenger astronauts about to blast into space. She felt the rumble of liftoff and hugged her baby closer in the cold. "Wow, look how pretty," she said 74 seconds later. "Is that normal?" someone else in the crowd asked. "They're gone," said Jane, wife of pilot Michael Smith. "What do you mean, Mom?" asked her son. "They're lost," she replied. All over the country, the millions watching that awful bloom spread across their television screens realized that something had gone wrong before they heard the voice of Mission Control: "Obviously . . . a major malfunction."

The disaster turned into a national trauma ingrained in the country's memory, much like president John F. Kennedy's assassination 23 years earlier and the September 11 attacks 15 years later.

Saturday's commemoration comes nearly three years after the shuttle Columbia disintegrated upon returning to Earth, killing all seven astronauts on board, AND ALSO, nearly 39 years after the crew of Apollo 1 was lost in a tragic fire in their capsule before liftoff.

Ladies and gentlemen, I'd planned to speak to you tonight to report on the state of the Union, but the events of earlier today have led me to change those plans. Today is a day for mourning and remembering.

Nancy and I are pained to the core by the tragedy of the shuttle Challenger. We know we share this pain with all of the people of our country. This is truly a national loss.

Nineteen years ago, almost to the day, we lost three astronauts in a terrible accident on the ground. But we've never lost an astronaut in flight; we've never had a tragedy like this. And perhaps we've forgotten the courage it took for the crew of the shuttle; but they, the Challenger Seven, were aware of the dangers, but overcame them and did their jobs brilliantly. We mourn seven heroes: Michael Smith, Dick Scobee, Judith Resnik, Ronald McNair, Ellison Onizuka, Gregory Jarvis, and Christa McAuliffe. We mourn their loss as a nation together.

For the families of the seven, we cannot bear, as you do, the full impact of this tragedy. But we feel the loss, and we're thinking about you so very much. Your loved ones were daring and brave, and they had that special grace, that special spirit that says, "Give me a challenge and I'll meet it with joy." They had a hunger to explore the universe and discover its truths. They wished to serve, and they did. They served all of us.

We've grown used to wonders in this century. It's hard to dazzle us. But for 25 years the United States space program has been doing just that. We've grown used to the idea of space, and perhaps we forget that we've only just begun. We're still pioneers.

They, the members of the Challenger crew, were pioneers. And I want to say something to the schoolchildren of America who were watching the live coverage of the shuttle's takeoff. I know it is hard to understand, but sometimes painful things like this happen. It's all part of the process of exploration and discovery. It's all part of taking a chance and expanding man's horizons. The future doesn't belong to the fainthearted; it belongs to the brave. The Challenger crew was pulling us into the future, and we'll continue to follow them.

I've always had great faith in and respect for our space program, and what happened today does nothing to diminish it. We don't hide our space program. We don't keep secrets and cover things up. We do it all up front and in public. That's the way freedom is, and we wouldn't change it for a minute.

We'll continue our quest in space. There will be more shuttle flights and more shuttle crews and, yes, more volunteers, more civilians, more teachers in space. Nothing ends here; our hopes and our journeys continue.

I want to add that I wish I could talk to every man and woman who works for NASA or who worked on this mission and tell them: "Your dedication and professionalism have moved and impressed us for decades. And we know of your anguish. We share it."

There's a coincidence today. On this day 390 years ago, the great explorer Sir Francis Drake died aboard ship off the coast of Panama. In his lifetime the great frontiers were the oceans, and an historian later said, "He lived by the sea, died on it, and was buried in it." Well, today we can say of the Challenger crew: Their dedication was, like Drake's, complete.

The crew of the space shuttle Challenger honored us by the manner in which they lived their lives. We will never forget them, nor the last time we saw them, this morning, as they prepared for their journey and waved goodbye and "slipped the surly bonds of earth" to "touch the face of God."

Focus Group Time

THANK YOU to everyone who has taken time to stop by and leave a comment or five. Whether you agree with me or not is completely irrelevant to me, I’m just happy you have taken 5 seconds (or as in the case the past day, 15 minutes), to give your opinion on everything in general. DAMN, I think I covered everything and everyone on that sentence. That was the idea anyway. We are thinking of maybe putting another transfer in through GM. We need to get more space so my lovely wife AND I can live a “normal” life, without interference from shitheads. By the way, I just now spellchecked this, (I am using Microsoft Word), and it wanted to replace “shithead” with “hothead”. NO, I meant shithead, you fucker!!!


To the point. Well, I think I left a big ass folder (big) in my mom and dad’s gun safe. It was for incase I or my family bite the big one. It has our will, and the kids birth certificates, and I am pretty sure our Social Security cards. SHIT. I need IDEAS on how I can get this back, because I need that shit! (Which I guess was kind of obvious) So, what do we do to get this VERY important stuff back from the people that I want NOTHING to do with???? And if you don't know what the hell I am talking about, read the last two posts, and focus!!

I Don't Think So

Dad here. Called and suspended your cell phone service this morning until such time as you are ready to come here and talk to me face to face. Both of you. I'm sorry but Granny showed me what you sent her and I can't pay for you to send her crap and say I am telling lies about you. She knows better. She has the whole deal start to finish on her PC as do we and many others. That's the nice thing about email. It can be printed, saved and forwarded There's a pretty big pile of presents in the guest room waiting for you to come and collect. I know Granddad's contains checks for all of you and don't know how long they will be valid. Granny thinks they may be for one year. I don't know but mom & I want you to come and get them please. Besides that we really need to talk. Face to face. If it will make you more at ease, Granny, Papaw, Glenda or Gary can be present. That way you will have assurance it's not one sided and fair. Up to you. In your hate mail to me, you mentioned being adults but everyone seems to agree that being 18 or older does not make you an adult rather it is your actions and how you treat others. I can never make either of you love me and would not want to. I would hope you mature enough to do that someday on your own but I can demand respect which I have not been getting. I will talk civil to you and tell you like it is and ask that you do the same. RSVP by land line please. Would like to have you here within 3 weeks if possible. me and Angi. It all started several weeks ago, nearly a month, in fact. My dad emailed me, and only me, because he knows he has a certain power over me. He emailed me, and he said, and then we (meaning me AND Angi) said, and then he said, and than we said, and then...........you get the idea of where I am going with this.

I think it's bout time you get the hint we don't want you two up our butt's. We enjoy our personal space. We more than welcome you guys spending time with the children as grandparents but you are making that even hard on us with these Emails and comments you make.You and I have a unspoken understanding I think of what you can and can't say to me. SO you try to corner Matt and Boss him. As if he is gonna listen to thing you say to him. The only thing this does is push him farther away from you. I think it's time you understand he is a grown man and if he wants your advice he will ask for it.I know this was to Matt but he wanted me to see and to respond. And then on Jan. the 9th, we sent mom and dad this:

Well, we heve heard absolutely nothing from anyone since then. (Check that) My mom text messaged me a few days before my dad's birthday, which was on the 14th. She said exactly this:

So, I left it at that. A couple days before dad's birthday, I text messaged mom again:

I was hoping we might MAYBE go to his party if he was having one, and Angi was like HELL NO!! And then mom replied:

Last Saturday was my dad's birthday, and after work (toilet paper day), I called and left a message on their machine, and then I text messaged him also. Since then we have heard nothing. No calls, emails, texts, or anything at ALL. I text messaged mom the other day, it was this exactly:

I recieved no response. After about a half hour I emailed her this also:

Yet again, no response. I made sure and did that when I knew she would be at work. And that was a couple of days ago.

Me and my Granny (my mom's mom) were text messaging back and forth while I was on break at work. She replied and I replied and blah, blah, blah. But then, I never heard from her again either. My last email to her was this, and she never replied, and I have yet to here from her since then:

I didn't know if you got my last message, I remember your last one was that you can't recieve pictures, and I was not sending one, so I don't know why your phone thought my phone was sending one, but I assure you I was not because I remember you telling me that before. Sorry about that!! Also, recently I got a page from Aunt Joyce, so I think my phone is screwy, because I really doubt she would call me for anything!!!

So there you have it. Angi emailed dad, and it had NOTHING to do with mom in any way, shape or form. I have tried talking to her, but so far, no dice. There is nothing I can do. Angi typed it, I read it after she typed it, and added some stuff, and hit send. All these years of dad being a jerk to everyone (you should know of all people), and SOMEONE finally puts him in his place, because I do not have the guts too, and everyone is mad at Angi??????!!!!!!! I don't get it at all.


I told mom they can see the kids whenever. If they choose not too, they can blame themselves as far as I am concerned. I am done with dad. Maybe he should take another 3 months off of work for mental anguish.


I have not forgotten about the software CD I am trying to give you a copy of, I still can't find it. I just wanted to let you know, I have not forgotten.
Like I said, I LOVE you and papaw with all my heart. I hope you guys are doing good. Are you?????????

And AFTER I sent that, I sent her copies of the original email messages that Angi and I sent dad, and dad replied with, and Dad's original email that started everything. I soon found out that on one of the messages, I accidentally sent one to dad INSTEAD of Granny. Dad got it, when I intended it for Granny. OOOPPPPSSSSSS!!!!!!! I sent dad this email, when it was intended for GRANNY:

Well, I about threw up when I realized that I sent it to dad instead of granny, because I knew that he was already super pissed (imagine that) from when we sent it the FIRST TIME TO HIM, NOT TO MENTION NOW AGAIN, so I had an idea that he would reply with vengence. So, after I got home from work, I saw two messages in my INBOX from dad. I was really nervous just SEEING them in my inbox. I was getting stomach pains, and here comes the anxiety attack, I just about threw up. Here are the two I recieved from dad:

I didn't ask them to or even want them to but unlike you, they all love me and feel for me and your mother because of the way you two have been acting. The reason I sent and continue to send them our correspondence is I value their opinion because they offer an honest and unbiased opinion. Nobody here wants to "checkup on you" or try to "control you". You had told us you had been sick and we hadn't heard anything from either of you so we tried to call you. For two weeks straight. Without success on all 3 of your phones. SO we were worried about you as any parent would. Sure you get busy sometimes. Everyone does. But to deliberately not answer messages for two weeks is just being rude. The reason you haven't heard from us is because you hurt us and insulted us and just wanted to give you a taste of your own medicine. Now I could say as you did that we are adults and will talk to you if we choose to but I don't do crap like that. Besides that, how can you send me hate mail and then say happy birthday, love....? We were gone all day Saturday and didn't get home until late in the evening so I didn't get your message until late. Also because you don't call us on the phones we provided and because you are now abusing them by the crap you have been sending to your Granny, your phone service will be ended. The reason she didn't answer your last message was because it was bull shit just like the trash you sent here that until now, I haven't answered. The phones are paid for and belong to you. If you are concerned about safety for Angi and the babies while they are on the road as I was, then you can pay for and restore your service on your own. Perhaps you will appreciate them if you have to pay for them. I won't continue to pay for them while you heap abuse on me. Although Mom did get a laugh about that part where you said you wished "she would free herself from my control". We are not the Borg. We are individuals, separate entities. We both respect and value each others option but live out our lives the way we wish to neither one has any control over the other nor do we wish to. That's one of the reasons we have stayed together for 28 years. Can you say the same?
Everyone in your household is always welcome here at anytime. After you listen to my lecture about all this, you will have your say and then hopefully we will put it behind us and move on but that will depend on you. If you can ever overcome you hate for me then it should be possible to have a normal relationship. If not then we will always have friction. Granny's parents were alcoholics when she was growing up. They treated her and Aunt Joyce horribly but she never once talked to them the way you two have talked to me because she loved them and always had respect for them. My parents were very abusive. Toilet Paper: The Bathing Suit Of Tomorrow!!

Technology is the cat’s kaka. I LOVE it, good lord, I love it. We now have our FIOS (Fiber Optic Service) set up. It is awesome, and we are one of like only 12 places in the country that have it. It is faster and cheaper than the broadband DSL we had. The broadband was SO much faster than dial-up access (kind of like a Ford Escort, and a Corvette. And the FIOS is like taking a corvette, and put a V-12 in it, and then supercharge it. Un-freaking believable. So in other words, I can go super-fast on the net, and I DO LOVE THE NET! I LOVE THIIS CITY!!! The email account with the new FIOS account can hold 2 GIGS of space, and the FIOS has an upstream that is 5 times that of broadband, which is 10 times faster that dial-up. Fort Wayne is the SHEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEIT! The computer can’t even keep up with the connection, and it has a AMD chip that runs at 2099 MHz, which is pretty dang fast, well at least it was when I got it in July ’04. Now they are running in the 3500 MHz range, but still, the one I got is pretty fast. What was I talking about again?


OH yeah- Technology! So, I am sitting here, netting away, and watching Seinfeld on the PS2 (it plays DVD’s also), and I burned some CD’s also. I worked on the computer ALL NIGHT on Saturday, (from 7ish p.m. until 8ish a.m.), because I wanted to burn some cd’s, and I was having trouble. Somehow, some files got corrupted, so I had to uninstall it, reinstall it, and I could not get it working at all. I did that game about 4 times, reinstalling it, taking it back out and so on. So then, I figured out that I had to fix some files in the computer that were supposed to be removed, and didn’t, and I had to not bunk up the much beloved computer in the process. So anyways, after a few hours of destroying hidden files, removing a couple of things that were bogging down the thing that had no practical purpose, I got the software working after installing it one last time.


So I got a bunch of cd’s burned, got to watch my shows (football, CSI, Law And Order, Without A Trace, Cold Case, Roseanne, Fresh Prince, The Outer Limits, That 70’s Show, Seinfeld, Cops, Just Shoot Me, ALL OF THAT ON LOCAL CHANNELS, WITHOUT CABLE!!!), and I worked 4 hours on Saturday cleaning bathrooms (time and a half is SO SWEET!). During the cleaning of the DISGUSTING bathrooms, I wrapped one of my coworkers in toilet paper, in which I thought she looked very fashionable, while another coworker took “incriminating photos” of me wasting company toilet paper, while harassing a female coworker by making her a toilet paper bathing suit, AND getting paid time and a half to do it! Not too shabby of a weekend. I still haven't picked up the forms for the temp. workers they are hiring, because so far, nobody is interested, which just blows me away! Or, I just don't know any people that want to make money, or they are earning more money than that, or I just suck. Either way. Still a damn good weekend.

Applicants Wanted










My plant is hiring temp. workers for May thru Oct. of this year. STARTING wage is around $20.00 per hour, (I think it is actually $18.00, but I'm not sure). THAT is not including shift premiun, and cost of living. The temp. hires will make about 65% of what we make, which is pretty goddamn good. I believe temp. insurance might be available (like COBRA or something), but I am not sure. Anyways, if you want to make about $700 per week after taxes, email me. A while back ago, JUST A MOM tagged me, and I totally forgot. Actually, a lot of things kind of popped up since then. There was Whooping Cough, a near divorce moment, the later which have come more than a few times the past 6 years. AAAAAAAAAAAAANYWAYS.................................

I Did It Again




Would you like to know what thing I am really, really, awesome at? Totally fucking things up in my life. My wife. Well, I talked to someone I was to have NO contact with. An ex of mine from a long, long time ago. (It happened also to be in a galaxy far, far, away). I unblocked her from my email, and emailed everyone (including her) the kids Xmas card pics. She sent me hers as well. Well, a few days ago she sent me a link to a house her and her husband are buying. I saved the link in my favorites list, and the house is really nice, they must be doing really well, I thought “good for them” (not in a sarcastic way). Well, she saw the link, and saw the house, and when we were watching the kids, I said something about the house we just moved from last year STILL up for sale. And she must have remembered the link or something because that’s when she brought it up “Why did you save a link to some house in Germantown?" (in Ohio). I told her someone sent it to me. As soon as I said that, she was obviously pissed immediately because she is not stupid. She said “Like who?” And I told her, and she said something like about how she (the ex) was supposed to be blocked on my email. And I said she was. And, she is super pissed, I tried to explain it, I told her why I unblocked her, and she said why did I have any contact with her, and I then realized I really fucked up big time. This has happened a few times. Starting with the 2003 incident. So, I think she is leaving me now. She said she might as well get used to doing things by herself. I know I fucked up. I told her it was completely innocent, but that is not the point that she cares about. She only cares that I had any contact. So, I guess this is it. There is nothing I can do to make this better, no way to fix this fuckup. There is something seriously wrong. I don’t know, well, anything at all. Other than she is leaving me. And it was completely my fault.

Barf-O-Rama 2006





Today started like any other day.













I went to bed around 9:30ish Monday morning. I got up about ten till 4pm, because Angi was sleeping, and although she usually gets me up for work, she was very tired today, so she slept a little longer than usual. (She always takes a nap while the kids take their nap.) So I get up, get going to work running a little behind, but not too bad, not enough to warrant a heart attack or something. I get to work, and get through until about 10:30p.m. Pretty good day so far really. Some minor setbacks, but nothing that is a big deal or anything. So, what happened at around 10:30 you ask? Well, quite frankly, I lost it. Literally. Blew chow, or chunks, spewed THREE times. I puked three times, launched it the first time, the follow-ups were in a trash can. I honked all OVER my job station, and ALSO, lets just say that some lucky people got an extra option on the tires AND rims they will get on their truck. I was lucky to find a giant piece of cardboard to cover the floor, so I didn’t have to stand in it, while I pounded those weights on every 8 seconds. But that was the first time. The second and third time, I ran to the trash can, and filled it nicely. The boss came over, because we was not running parts, because I was blowing chunks in the trash can, and the T.C. (job setter, or Team Coordinator), came over and started dry heaving, and was a millimeter away from honking also, because EVIDENTLY, he has a weak stomach. So, the supervisor hops on my job, and tells me when I return from upchucking my chuck up, to go to the medical department. I go there and blah blah blah, they call the boss back, and blah blah blah, the boss sends me home. I clocked out at 11someething p.m. , which sucks because there is still two or three hours left in the shift that I won’t get paid for. They NEVER send anyone home for any reason hardly, so I guess at least they know I really am sick, and not blowing smoke up their ass for missing last Thursday and Friday. The boss excused those days for me because I brought him a doctor’s note, and proof that I was there, not to mention the presents I left on my job and in the trash can for someone else to clean up. MMMMMMMMM………………….. Barf. Puke. Vomit. Spew. Honk. Toss the cookies. Upchucked the chuckup. Hurl. Pray to the porcelain God. Ralph Buick. I feel pity for the housekeeper (janitor) that has to clean THAT up. Oh, and not to mention the people on down the line that has to put the tires on the truck, the tires that I Ralph Buicked all over. And the guy on first shift who will smell something funny on the rollers, and on the station where the housekeeper did not do a real good job of getting it all. After all, it was volumey, chunky, and in a lot of tiny little spaces that I am sure no one will be touching.

What A Special Lady




A few days ago I recieved a box from JUST A MOM. Jaye is such a wonderful person who I took upon myself to adopt her as my own mom. She has 5 daughters, and has had a half a million kids in and out of her life as a foster parent. She made my kids some quilts, and sent me a comic book, and Ang a candle thingy. She is such an awesome person, and was nice enough to take time out of her life for me and my wife and kids!!!! WOW!!! THANK YOU!! The kids love the quilts, and they are using them in their cribs. The book is awesome, I don't have that one , so thanks!!! (I love Calvin and Hobbes) Angi really liked the candle too!! THANK YOU!!!!

FINALLY, some accountability! The FORMER Republican majority leader, House Representative Tom Delay (Texas), announced he would not try to reclaim his post as Republican majority leader, which he was forced to step down from in September 2005. He had to step down (originally thought of as a temporary setback), because he was on the wrong end of an arrest warrant, and was forced appear at a Harris County, Texas sheriff's office to be booked on conspiracy and money laundering charges.

DeLay has denied any wrongdoing, telling fellow House Republicans in a letter Saturday, "During my time in Congress, I have always acted in an ethical manner within the rules of our body and the laws of our land. I am fully confident time will bear this out."

The House ethics committee admonished DeLay on three separate occasions in 2004. In addition to the Texas charges, a federal investigation is pursuing DeLay's ties to disgraced MILLIONAIRE lobbyist Jack Abramoff. Abramoff, has just made a deal with federal law enforcement authorities that he WILL cooperate in implicating possibly 50 lawmakers in a corruption scandal that will SURPASS BY FAR anything in history, even Richard Nixon’s little WATERGATE “mishap”.


While on the tour to visit evacuees from hurricane Katrina with top administration officials from Washington, including U.S. Secretary of Labor Elaine L. Chao and U.S. Treasury Secretary John W. Snow, DeLay stopped to chat with three young boys resting on cots. The congressman likened their stay to being at camp and asked, "Now tell me the truth boys, is this kind of fun?"

During the Texas
redistricting warrant controversy, several Democratic members of the Texas House of Representatives fled the state in order to prevent the House from establishing a quorum of members, thereby preventing the House from acting on any legislation. Although not a member of the Texas legislature, DeLay became involved, by contacting:

The real scandal of Tom DeLay

WASHINGTON, D.C. (Creators Syndicate) -- Forget the freebie trips across the Atlantic and the Pacific. Forget the casinos and the allegedly illicit contributions -- they represent only degrees of avarice.


To grasp the moral bankruptcy of the public Tom DeLay, the House majority leader, you only have to know about Frank Murkowski and Saipan.


Today, Frank Murkowki is the governor of Alaska, but from 1980 to 2002, he was a conservative Republican senator from Alaska.


How conservative? His voting record earned him zero ratings from organized labor's AFL-CIO and the liberal Americans for Democratic Action, and perfect 100s from the U.S. Chamber of Commerce and the American Conservative Union.


But as chairman of the Senate Energy and Natural Resources Committee, Frank Murkowski became furious at the abusive sweatshop conditions endured by workers, overwhelmingly immigrants, in the U.S. territory of the Northern Mariana Islands, of which Saipan is the capital.
Because they were produced in a territory of the United States, garments traveled tariff-free and quota-free to the profitable U.S. market and were entitled to display the coveted "Made in the USA" label.


Among the manufacturers that had profited from the un-free labor market on the island were Tommy Hilfiger USA, Gap, Calvin Klein and Liz Claiborne.


Moved by the sworn testimony of U.S. officials and human-rights advocates that the 91 percent of the workforce who were immigrants -- from China, the Philippines, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh -- were being paid barely half the U.S. minimum hourly wage and were forced to live behind barbed wire in squalid shacks minus plumbing, work 12 hours a day, often seven days a week, without any of the legal protections U.S. workers are guaranteed, Murkowski wrote a bill to extend the protection of U.S. labor and minimum-wage laws to the workers in the U.S. territory of the Northern Marianas.


So compelling was the case for change the Alaska Republican marshaled that in early 2000, the U.S. Senate unanimously passed the Murkowski worker reform bill.
But one man primarily stopped the U.S. House from even considering that worker-reform bill: then-House Republican Whip Tom DeLay.


According to law firm records recently made public, lobbyist Jack Abramoff, paid millions to stop reform and keep the status quo, met personally at least two dozen times with DeLay on the subject in one two-year period. The DeLay staff was often in daily contact with Abramoff.
DeLay traveled with his family and staff over New Year's of 1997 on an Abramoff scholarship endowed by his client, the government of the territory, to the Marianas, where golf and snorkeling were enjoyed.


DeLay fully approved of the working and living conditions. The Texan's salute to the owners and Abramoff's government clients was recorded by ABC-TV News: "You are a shining light for what is happening to the Republican Party, and you represent everything that is good about what we are trying to do in America and leading the world in the free-market system"
Later, DeLay would tell The Washington Post's Juliet Eilperin that the low-wage, anti-union conditions of the Marianas constituted "a perfect petri dish of capitalism. It's like my Galapagos Island."


Contrast that with what then-Sen. Murkowski told me in a 1998 interview: "The last time we heard a justification that economic advances would be jeopardized if workers were treated properly was shortly before Appomattox."


The "Made in the USA" label means standards of quality and standards of conduct.
But more important than how a product is made is how the people who make that product are treated -- as human beings with innate dignity -- who are free to organize and entitled to a living wage.

WHOOPADEEDOO!!!!!!

Hi! I am here sick again. The ball'n'chain was sick again too, but she is pretty much over it. The kiddos are better. I missed work yesterday to take care of thing 1 and thing 2, and I let her sleep in. She was SUPPOSED to go to the doctor today, but she made me an appointment today instead, and she is going this Wed. I have been coughing up a lung, and it's getting hard to breathe, so she was nice enough to get me in, even though I did not want to go. I just got back, and he gave me a buch of meds, some super strong cough syrup, and some anti-biotics, I evidently have whooping cough. The doc. gave me a work note, so I am off until Monday. WHOOPADEEDOO!!!!


On a side note, my rents are NOT coming over this weekend!!!

Women.

For some reason, they can't stand to be around you, so when you finally go somewhere else, they complain about that too. They don't give it up, But they complain when you look at X rated things. Also, they complain about you never seeing the kids, but then they say things like Why don't you go to work, or Can't wait for you to go back to work. Damned if you do, damned if you don't. I give up. Oh yeah, and I suck as a parent, whatever I say, I am wrong. Ugh. Women.


I am quiting smoking, have not smoked since work on Thursday the 22nd. So, I hope to not give in when a coworker offers a cig. My plant is supposed to ban smoking anyway (but for real this time, as opposed to the other three times).
